Aerarium mesh material

The base material for all Aerariums is a high-quality polyamide mesh. The netting is machine-knitted and referred to as warp knit. It is manufactured using a patented technique.

With a density of approx. 150 meshes per cm² or 1000 MESH (meshes per square inch), our products are significantly above the international standard value of 200 MESH required for mosquito-proof fabrics.

The classic AERARIUM: the rearing container with many useful features.

  • Four or five mesh sides guarantee healthy air circulation
  • Transparent vinyl front panel offers a view of the entire contents
  • Large, practical opening with a robust 2-way zipper, can be opened as much or as little as needed
  • Tear-resistant construction with strong all-around stitching
  • Easy to fold for storage and shipping
  • Feather-light for transport, travel, and exhibition
  • Washable, disinfectable, and bleach-resistant for repeated use
  • Fine mesh prevents the entry of pests such as ants, tachinid flies, ichneumon wasps, mosquitoes, and other parasites
  • Water-repellent fabric, dries quickly, does not mold
  • Practical carrying loops: the containers can also be hung up or anchored to the floor or wall

Durable, cost-effective, hygienic, and practical: the rearing container with plenty of light and air for all kinds of small animals.

Kickbag

Since January 2022, we have been working with Kickbag to make our deliveries more environmentally friendly. Whenever possible and practical, we use reusable shipping bags made from recycled PET instead of single-use cardboard boxes.

The empty Kickbags are returned by mail using the included pre-paid return label so that they can be reused for a future shipment.

Aerarium Production

The Aerarium is the result of a collaboration between Papa Papillon and breeders from all over the world.

The nets are not mass-produced industrial goods. Today, they are sewn by hand in modern small-scale workshops in China. These workshops employ skilled sewers, and there is no systematic exploitation or child labor.

The manufacturer is under continuous monitoring by amfori BSCI, which oversees aspects such as occupational safety, discrimination, workloads, compensation, and environmental protection.

Aerarium Nets (Schweiz) GmbH develops, produces, and imports mesh enclosures (aeraria) and sells them directly, through resellers, and via direct contacts from interested institutions. It also conducts training, consultations, and events, and provides services related to butterfly caterpillars and aeraria.
Aerarium Nets (Schweiz) GmbH is committed to promoting biodiversity and sustainability and exercises social responsibility in its activities.

The Managing Director and owner of Aerarium Nets (Schweiz) GmbH is Reto Künzler. He lives with his family in Bern. For the biologist, who holds a doctorate, his current work represents a return to his roots: after 20 years of working with geodata and national maps, he changed direction in the summer of 2020. With his newly founded company, he took over the aerarium trade from Papa Papillon.

Interest, an understanding of nature, and sustainability are at the heart of Reto Künzler's work – butterflies are the ideal ambassadors for raising awareness of species diversity and biodiversity!
