Nature is waking up - but it is still too early for butterflies. Overwintered pupae should be kept in a cool and dark place for now.
The first harbingers of spring signal warmer days - and yet it is still too early for the butterflies. At the moment, the vegetation has neither caterpillar food nor flowers to offer them.
The best place for overwintered pupae is a sheltered, dry, and unheated location such as a shed or a garage on the side of a house away from the sun. Darkening the area additionally helps to prevent premature hatching. A cool and dark environment prevents the larvae from completing their metamorphosis and preparing to hatch.
The later, the better: butterflies that hatch in May have a much greater chance of finding a partner! The next generation will encounter an abundant food supply, and the caterpillars will be able to develop perfectly.
