The comma (Polygonia c-album) owes its name to the small, white, C-shaped mark on the underside of its hindwings. It is another of our native butterflies that hibernates as an adult. Its unique wings and dark underside provide perfect camouflage, making it look like a dried leaf during the winter. It hides in tree hollows, woodpiles, or under overhanging branches and awakens on mild winter days to briefly enjoy the sun.
